MDA Spring Soiree: Great food for a great cause

Something Lite for the MDA Spring Soiree  For many food lovers, spring is a time to leave behind the hearty meat dishes of autumn and winter and look forward to more fresh fruits and vegetables. With longer days and fine weather it just seems to take a little less resolve to get out, get active and eat healthier. At this year’s Muscular Dystrophy Association Spring Soiree we are preparing a healthy but decadent vegetarian dish to celebrate the season and help raise funds for the MDA.  Supporting People with Muscular Dystrophy and ALS The Hawaii MDA works year round to fund research toward finding a cure for muscular dystrophy and helps individuals and families in Hawaii that are affected by the disease. In addition to contributing to research the Hawaii MDA provides a clearing house for information and support for people with degenerative muscle diseases and their families. Each year the Hawaii MDA also runs a special summer camp on Oahu’s North Shore at Camp Erdman. The Spring Soiree, now in its 17th year, is their biggest fundraiser and T... Read more

Tiki’s New Belgium Beer Dinner

After our first Tiki’s beer dinner in January was such a success we were looking for an excuse to do it again. Back in January we featured six of Kona Brewing Company’s best brews with pairings like New England style clam bake with Lemongrass Luau and spumoni fritta with Pipeline Porter. After such a fun and flavorful event it was just a matter of time before we came up with some more inspired food and beer parings. We didn’t have to wait long as New Belgium Brewing Company’s arrival in Hawaii last month gave us a whole new selection of beers to try. Our New Belgium Beer Dinner last month (March 26) was an amazing success with some mouthwatering pairings.  My Beer and Food Pairing Manifesto I believe anything you eat with beer should not be subtle. Beer is something you can quaff. It’s a hearty drink with bold flavors and any food pairings need to stand up to that. When planning for a beer dinner I am thinking salty, spicy, smoky, crispy, rich and creamy. The same kinds of flavor you find with popular beer foods like nachos and cheese and Buf... Read more

Join me on Monday, January 11th at 6pm at Tiki's Grill & Bar for the "Kona Brewing Company Beer Dinner".  I will pair the dinner menu with a lineup of Brew Master Ryan McVeigh's Kona Brewing Company beers.  See full line up at and get tickets at: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/tikis-grill-bar-presents-kona-brewing-company-beer-dinner-tickets-19894467889  Brewmastser Ryan McVeigh began his professional brewing career in Colorado in the year 2000; he then moved to Boise, Idaho and brewed for Big Horn Brewing Co. Finding that the "big city life" was not for him, he searched for a larger brewery in a small town environment. When Kona Brewing Co brought him to the islands in 2005, it turned out to be exactly what he was looking for. He has since worked in every capacity of the brewing process at Kona Brew, from cleaning kegs to lab work, filtration operations to sales. He currently holds the title of Brewery Manager and Brewmaster. To give you a sneak peek... the second course will feature a Lemongrass Luau Ale. Lemongrass Luau is a cr... Read more

Chocolate Lovers Enjoyed the 5th Annual Hawaii Chocolate Festival

The 5th annual Hawaii Chocolate Festival just finished and Tiki’s Grill and Bar was there. The festival was part of the Pacific Expos’ Fall Food & New Products show at the Blaisdell Convention Center, on October 16-18. The chocolate festival highlighted the growing local cacao industry with some delicious chocolate creations using locally produced cacao. This year Tiki’s served Crunchy Manoa White and Dark Chocolate Ravioli. Passport to Chocolate Heaven For $20, visitors to the show got a tasting passport that let them sample at least 10 specialty chocolate creations. If all that amazing chocolaty goodness wasn’t enough, a passport also got attendees into the Food and New Products show for free where they could check out another 200 booths with many offering samples of their products to try. The Inside Scoop The filling for the chocolate ravioli has a few surprises that I know chocolate connoisseurs are going to love. Along with the house made ricotta will be dark chocolate, mac nuts and candied Buddha’s hand. Each ravioli is t... Read more
